Unlock the Secret to Non-Profit Success in the Pet Industry!

From the Start: How Purpose Shapes Praline’s Backyard Dog Services and Foundation

When I launched Praline’s Backyard Dog Services, I knew it wouldn’t just be a dog-walking and pet-sitting business. From the very beginning, I envisioned a business that would not only provide exceptional care for pets but also give back to the community. Specifically, I wanted to support survivors of domestic violence and their pets—a group too often overlooked in conversations about safety and support.

Initially, this commitment was woven directly into the business model: a portion of proceeds would fund services for survivors and their pets. But as our work grew, so did the need for a more formal structure to expand our impact. That’s when Praline’s Backyard Foundation was born—a nonprofit arm dedicated to housing, fostering, and providing safety for the pets of survivors while they transition to safety themselves.

Lessons from Leading Both

1️⃣ Purpose Must Be Clear

Our mission—ensuring no survivor has to choose between their safety and their pet—has been the guiding star for both the business and the foundation. It’s what inspires our team, our clients, and our donors to rally behind us.

2️⃣ Integration Creates Sustainability

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the power of integration. By dedicating 10% of proceeds from Praline’s Backyard Dog Services to the foundation, we’ve created a sustainable model where the business directly fuels the nonprofit’s work.

3️⃣ Bold Goals Matter

This past December, our foundation aimed to raise $50,000 to fund critical programs, including the development of a mobile app. While we fell short of the goal, raising $2,500 during a live event and additional funds through client donations was a reminder that every step forward matters.

For those of you exploring the idea of starting a nonprofit arm, here’s what I’d suggest:

Align Your Mission with Your Values: Your nonprofit should feel like a natural extension of your business, just as ours grew from our commitment to survivors and their pets.

Build Sustainability into Your Plan: Whether it’s a percentage of proceeds or another model, find ways for your business to fuel your nonprofit work.

Seek Guidance: Launching a nonprofit can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. There are resources and support available to help you navigate the process.

At Paws on Purpose, we’ve taken the lessons from my experience and created a service to help pet business owners like you establish and grow nonprofit arms. Whether you’re just starting to dream about it or ready to take the leap, know this: balancing purpose and profit is possible—and deeply rewarding.
