While Praline Pecan’s backyard symbolized safety for pets, my experiences in domestic violence shelters unveiled a more profound need. Time and again, I witnessed survivors grappling with the heart-wrenching decision to return to their abusers, compelled by the bond they shared with their pets. At the local humane society, the stories were equally disheartening. Survivors often relinquished ownership of their beloved pets due to unstable housing.
These observations solidified my resolve. It wasn’t just about providing a safe backyard experience; it was about creating environments where survivors and their pets could find refuge, stability, and hope.
Embarking on a Charitable Journey
Inspired by these experiences and Praline Pecan’s joy, I set up Praline’s Backyard Dog Services and, eventually, Praline’s Backyard Foundation. Navigating the 501c-3 process was my way of ensuring that the bond between survivors and their pets was honored, protected, and nurtured.
